LETTER: Welfare is not a black-vs.-white issue
To the Editor:
I am sick and tired of the attacks on Lewiston Mayor Bob Macdonald, and I had to stand up and say something about it.
When I met Mayor Macdonald, he was a class act. He really did judge me by “the content of my character and not the color of my skin.” Bob was pleasant and respectful, and I have no doubt about his sincerity and commitment to the people of Lewiston.
This outrageous attack on Mayor Macdonald for being a racist is out of line. Mayor Macdonald wants to cut back on extreme welfare spending. Welfare is not a black-versus-white issue.
Kristen Short honored with Amgen Cancer Survivor Award
Singer/songwriter, mother of three and two-year breast cancer survivor Kristen Short of Norway has been named the winner of the 2012 Amgen Breakaway from Cancer Survivor Award.
The award is given to a cancer survivor involved in Central Maine community outreach who demonstrates a passion for helping others with cancer. It is bestowed in conjunction with the annual Dempsey Challenge presented by Amgen, the primary fundraising event for the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing at Central Maine Medical Center.
Short had a bilateral mastectomy and underwent chemotherapy and radiation treatments in 2010 and 2011. She has made a significant impact on the community with her passion for music through performances at several benefit concerts for the Dempsey Center. She also provides a comforting presence to those going through cancer treatment, traveling from Norway to Lewiston to offer encouragement to those who have little support.
