Twin Cities Holiday Celebration expands for 2015

The annual Twin Cities Holiday Celebration on Saturday, November 28 will expand into a daylong event this year, with activities expected to run from noon to 8:30 p.m. Sponsored by Center Street Dental of Auburn, the celebration’s growth is due to the involvement of the L-A chapter of the Union of Maine Visual Artists, who stepped forward to help longtime organizers, the Lewiston Downtown Holiday Celebration Committee and the Auburn Business Association, expand the usual evening event into one encompassing afternoon activities. All event details will be posted as they are finalized at www.downtownlewistonassociation.com.

UMVA’s contribution, called “The Festival of Art and Lights,” will include a “Most Creative Use of Light” window decorating contest, a crafters sale of unique high-quality gift items, discounts at downtown businesses, and carolers strolling the streets. These activities will take place in the downtowns of both Auburn and Lewiston. The day of the event, November 28, is also “Shop Local Day.”

In addition, the 2015 film version of “Cinderella” will be shown in Auburn Public Library’s Androscoggin Community Room at 1 p.m., while “Festive Hip Hop” with Ryan Morrill, an interactive program for those ages 8 to 18, will take place in Lewiston Public Library’s Callahan Hall from 3 to 4 p.m.

The annual Parade of Lights will kick off at 6 p.m. The event route will run from Park Street in Lewiston to Festival Plaza in Auburn. At the Plaza, there will be free snacks, free photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus, free wagon rides, and free dental bags provided by Center Street Dental. Music will be provided by Dionne Entertainment.

“We’ve wanted to expand the Twin Cities Holiday Celebration for a couple of years now, but we didn’t have the manpower,” said Lewiston Community Relations Coordinator Dottie Perham-Whittier. “UMVA has been a tremendous asset in enhancing the celebration this year and helping us highlight L-A as a holiday destination place. It’s really impressive how the new activities have fallen into place so nicely. It’s going to be a great afternoon and evening.”
