LETTER: Welfare is not a black-vs.-white issue

To the Editor:

I am sick and tired of the attacks on Lewiston Mayor Bob Macdonald, and I had to stand up and say something about it.

When I met Mayor Macdonald, he was a class act. He really did judge me by “the content of my character and not the color of my skin.” Bob was pleasant and respectful, and I have no doubt about his sincerity and commitment to the people of Lewiston.

This outrageous attack on Mayor Macdonald for being a racist is out of line. Mayor Macdonald wants to cut back on extreme welfare spending. Welfare is not a black-versus-white issue.

In fact, as the only black person in either party running for state office in Maine, I take great offense to white liberals claiming it is.

I have a newsflash for white liberals. We are not lazy people who need welfare. I am just like you. I want a job to provide for my family, and I don’t want the government in my business. I am tired of being treated as a statistic and a vote. I am more than that.

We have dreams of employment, raising a family and home ownership—just like everyone else. If these white liberals want to find the real racists, they should not be looking at Mayor Macdonald for wanting to limit welfare. Instead, they should instead look in the mirror for thinking all black people are on welfare!

Bravo ! Fantastic letter. Thanks Mr. Graise for giving a reasonable argument concerning what we know to be a liberal agenda! I once had to rely on assitance when I was out of work and with being the sole provider of my family. I did not make it a way of life and sought to better my chances for employment throughout my adult life. Mayor MacDonald would not be a good Mayor if he didn’t address the sensitive and tough issues. This had to be addressed and I honor him for his courage and that he did not sugar-coat the issue! We need jobs to put people to work! We don’t need a further burden on our system. I support you Mr. Graise and hope that you go far in our legislature for the betterment of Maine!
